AOL?s Mobile-First Group Steps To The Stage With Play, An Instagram For Music

As you know, we're now owned by AOL. And while it's a big company, you'd think we'd be able to find out some tidbits of information about secret projects they're working on. Nope. Sometimes it seems as if they're fine with anyone else finding out what they're working on as long as it's not us. Take the "mobile-first" group for example. We heard about their tablet reader thing when everyone else did. And now we're hearing about their secret music-sharing app, Play, when everyone else is. Well, at least it's a good idea. It's essentially Instagram for music. At least that's how Senior Director of Mobile Projects Sol Lipman pitches it to me.

Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

letitslide
I have a thing for physics games, and I've been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I've posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

BMW i8 prototype caught on video having fun in the snow

Grainy pictures are pretty neat, but spy videos of an unreleased car in motion are a little more titillating. That's what we have this morning, video of the BMW i8 concept car motoring around in the snow -- flanked by a series of rather more pedestrian Bavarian autos. The i8 is the auto formerly known as Vision EfficientDynamics, name shortened but concept kept the same: 62MPG from a vehicle that's still fun to drive and reasonably quick -- 0 to 62 in 4.8 seconds. The quality of the footage is perhaps a little low, but if anything that just adds to the fun.

Google promises tighter Android Market security in wake of Trojan outbreak

When we first reported on applications in the official Android Market being infected with a Trojan backdoor, 21 malicious apps were found. After the dust had settled, the total was closer to 60 -- and Google has now announced what it is doing to undo the damage and prevent future outbreaks in the Market.

For starters, Google is remotely wiping the rogue applications from users' devices and pushing a security update for the Android Market app. Google will also email a notice to affected users to let them know that the update has been applied and that changes made by the Trojan-bearing apps have been undone. A confirmation notice will also be sent once the cleanup has finished.

Google also promised to beef up the Android Market's security systems and stated that work is underway with various partners to address "underlying issues."

The Android Market is now at the point where it's got a vast number of high-quality apps. Perhaps now that its security shortcomings have been exposed, it's time to slow the inrush of new apps and devote more time and resources to making sure no more Android users fall victim to such attacks.

iOS 4.3 to be released today, and will allow up to five Personal Hotspot connections?

Rather than waiting until March 11 and the release of iPad 2, it looks like iOS 4.3 might be made available at 10am Pacific Time today according to BGR's sources.

The Golden Master was released only five days ago, but if no hard blocking bugs were found by Apple's slew of slavering developers, an early release isn't unusual -- and the sooner Apple gets iOS 4.3 into the hands of millions of consumers, the sooner any remaining bugs will be uncovered.

In other news, BGR is also reporting that the Personal Hotspot feature will allow five devices to share your device's 3G connection via Wi-Fi. The number of devices can still be reduced by the carrier, however -- if AT&T or Verizon (or Vodafone, or Orange...) want a maximum of three devices sharing a connection, then that's all you'll get.

Presumably, jailbreaking will re-open any carrier-closed slots, however.

OpenFeint and The9 will stimulate devs to port their games to Android with cold hard cash

Are you a developer seeking the widest and most profitable distribution for your mobile software? The traditional platform for achieving such goals over the past couple of years has been Apple's iOS, but Android's rabid ascendancy has recently turned that into a legitimate question. A question that OpenFeint is looking to sway even further in Google's favor by announcing it will fund the porting of games from "other app stores" to Android with the help of Chinese online game operator The9. The specially selected games will of course get saddled with OpenFeint integration and the whole effort does have the waft of a publicity grab to us, but hey, it's another few pennies thrown into the bottomless well known as "Android gaming." Surely something worthy will eventually come out of it, no?

[Thanks, Calvin]

FCC going after cellphone jammers, could land users in the slammer

FCC going after cellphone jammers
The FCC has put a bounty on the heads of all the cellphone-hating vigilantes out there. These GPS and signal jammers are particularly popular amongst theaters, quiet restaurants and in many school systems fighting the good fight against sexting during class. The FCC is calling on folks to stop and to report their neighbors for using these devices -- reason being that they pose serious health and safety risks by interfering with 911 calls and other emergencies in the vicinity. So if you know a so-called 'jammer,' don't hesitate to file a complaint about them to the FCC -- the info can be found at the source link below.
